Schuyler received his B.A. from Dartmouth College (English Literature) and, after several years spent working in India, Romania and with refugee communities in Chicago, attended University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. He completed his internship in pediatrics at Yale, and then moved to New York University/Bellevue for a residency in adult psychiatry, followed by a fellowship in child & adolescent psychiatry at Columbia, where he also completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Public Child Psychiatry and received his Masters in Public Health. He has published papers in Literature & Medicine and Journal of Medical Humanities as well as shorter pieces and book reviews for other journals, including Journal of the American Medical Association, New England Journal of Medicine, and Academic Medicine. He has published chapters in three books, writing about case formulation in child and adolescent psychiatry, trauma mental health research, and the question of resistance and defiance in medical narratives. He was the inaugural John F. McDermott Assistant Editor in Residence of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Schuyler is currently Associate Training Director at New York University's department of child and adolescent psychiatry.
