John Woodcock retired from teaching at Indiana University at the end of 2003. His teaching included humanities courses on medical issues and courses and workshops in autobiography. He worked as a professional environmental activist in the 70s and as a hospice volunteer in the 80s. He currently serves on the Bloomington Hospital Medical Ethics Committee and offers literature- and film-based workshops on patient-physician relationships to various medical audiences.An early retirement project is finishing a collection of as-told-to autobiographies of people whose lives have been transformed in a positive way by a major stress such as illness.
