LEARNING GOALS: Students will become familiar with the principles and practices of fee-for-service and managed care in changing and competitive health care environments. The physicians_ role in these systems will be emphasized in order to prepare graduates for encountering managed care in a variety of practice settings. .

OUTLINE:

Week 1: How We Got Here, and Where are We, Anyway?
Brief overview of health care delivery since 1900
Brief overview of health care economics: public and private sectors
Basic concepts and definitions of managed care

Week 2: Managed Care at Work
The effects of managed care on patient care, medical education, and research

Week 3: The Physician and Managed Care
Efficiency and effectiveness, protocols, cqi, and "cookbook medicine," the team role, and gatekeeping: good or bad?

Week 4: Managed Care and the Future
Managed care as a transitional state, student case presentations, course summary
